Microsoft has already confirmed that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for existing users of its OS — but what if your system is currently running a pirated copy of Windows? Well, you’ll be eligible for a free upgrade just like everyone else.

“We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10,” said Terry Myerson, who runs Microsoft’s operating systems unit, in an interview with Recode.

The move is actually focused on the Chinese market, where it’s estimated a whopping 75% of PCs are running pirated copies of Windows. But the gesture will also be extended to Windows users in other markets around the world.

Back in January during a Windows 10 preview event, Microsoft confirmed the software would be free for the first year for those running Windows 7 or later (unless you’re running an enterprise version).

Myerson also confirmed to Recode that Windows 10 will be available globally “this summer.” That’s the first time Microsoft has provided us with a timeframe for the release, while many expecting to have to wait until this fall to get their hands on it.

In addition to a new look, Windows 10 brings back the Start menu, adds Cortana integration, and introduces Microsoft’s brand new Spartan browser. There will be lots of other new features and improvements throughout, making it a worthy upgrade well worth looking forward to.
